Welcome to Zagreb

Zagreb is the capital of the Republic of Croatia with a population of about one million. It is Croatia's largest industrial, educational, cultural and traffic center.

In 1994, Zagreb celebrated its 900th anniversary. You will be able to see how those years shaped our city, and accordingly you can identify three different parts of Zagreb.

Gornji grad (The Upper Town) is a part dating from the medieval ages. It is situated on the slopes of the Medvednica mountain. It was the strategic guard of the plains stretching beneath. In the past, there were two cities: clerical Kaptol and civilian Gradec (Grič) whose relations weren't peaceful all the time (the name of street 'Krvavi most' - the Bloody Bridge is witness to this).

Donji grad (The Downtown) dates from the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. It has orthogonal streets, large park Maksimir and lake Jarun, beautiful palaces and commercial zones.

Novi Zagreb (New Zagreb) lying on both banks of the river Sava is a city built in the last 50 years. New Zagreb’s characteristics are large avenues, modern apartments and commercial buildings.

The University of Zagreb (Sveučilište) has a tradition since 1669 when it was established as the Jesuit Academy. Today it is made up of 22 faculties and 10 scientific institutes with about 50000 students and represents the base for the Croatia's future.

Do not be worried if you hear a bang at 12 o’clock. It is a real cannon announcing noon. It is also a part of Zagreb's tradition.

The heraldic symbol of Zagreb consists of a town on a hill with opened gates, symbolizing its traditional hospitality. You will be able to check it out yourself.

Arrival in Zagreb

If we receive your arrival note with all the required data, we will wait for you at the arrival destination. Follow these instructions carefully to avoid any misunderstandings.

Note: At each of these three arrival places, you can exchange your money for Croatian currency.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation for all students will be provided at one of these student dormitories:

You will be accommodated in double rooms, which might have showers and toilet facilities (this depends on the pavilion you will be situated at - some old pavilions have common showers and toilets for every floor). Cooking appliances (i.e. stove) can be found on every floor. There are no dishes in the dorms nor refrigerators. If you want to wash clothes, the laundry is at SD 'Cvjetno Naselje', Odranska 8, pavilion no. 6 and also near the Volleyball hall. During university semesters you might have to share a room with a Croatian student.

The student dormitory is made up of pavilions, so there you will find a student restaurant, a news-stand, a shop and a post office. You can find student restaurants in several places in the city, the most visited ones are:

Studentski dom 'Cvjetno Naselje', Odranska 8 (entrance from Prisavlje, between pavilions no. 6 and 7)

During the summer, the pavilion where you will be accommodated will serve as a student hostel, so there will be a full time reception desk. During your stay, you may have to move from one dormitory to another. We will, naturally, try hard to avoid this if at all possible.

The place you are going to stay often has some rules (written or non-written) regarding cleaning, loud music, smoking, etc. Please behave as if it were your own home. IAESTE will not find new accommodation if you lose your room because of bad behaviour.

Note: You have to pay the rent within 10 days upon your arrival.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

The local transportation in Zagreb consists of trams and buses provided by Zagrebački električni tramvaj ('ZET'). You will be able to buy a monthly student transportation ticket. The ticket is valid for all the bus and tram lines in the city of Zagreb, and for the suburban railway (if marked 'HŽ') as well as the funicular ('Uspinjača') running from Down- to Upper Town. The ticket is not valid for the suburban bus lines operated by other companies (concessionaires).

Trams and buses run from 5.00 till 23.30. During the night there are night trams (lines 31, 32, 33 and 34), running app. every half an hour.

Try not to lose your student monthly ticket, because it’s very hard to make a new one.

Free time activities

SIGHTSEEING

The most important zone is the very center of the city: Trg bana Jelačića (central square) with adjacent streets, squares and parks.

This area - the Downtown (Donji grad) was developed towards the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It is shaped in the so-called Green Horseshoe. The eastern branch includes the palace of Croatian Academy of Science and Arts, the Pavilion of Arts and the monument of the first Croatian King Tomislav. The Botanical Garden forms the southern branch. The western branch consists of the buildings of the Croatian National Theatre, the University and the old National Library. In the Upper Town you should take a walk to Kaptol, St. Stephen's (or The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) Cathedral, then Grič where you can see St. Marco's Church with its famous mosaic roof, Sabor (the Parliament), Kamenita vrata (The Stone Gate), Lotršćak tower with the noon-cannon and there you can admire the view of the whole downtown area.

Outside the city center, you should see the beautiful park Maksimir with the ZOO, in the eastern part, and Mirogoj (Zagreb's cemetery) with its famous arcades. In the new part of Zagreb there are: the Lisinski concert hall, the new National University Library and, across the Sava river, the well-known Zagreb Fair.

Lots of historical pieces collected throughout the centuries are kept in more than 30 museums and galleries. You should visit the Mimara museum, a very famous museum of fine arts donated by the great collector A.T. Mimara. Other museums also worth seeing are: the Museum of Arts and Crafts, the Art Gallery in the Upper Town, Strossmayer's Gallery of Old Masters and (you must not miss this) the Technical Museum. For more information, you can contact the Tourist Information Center (TIC) at Trg bana Jelačića 11 (at the corner near the city map).

THE SURROUNDINGS OF ZAGREB

The Medvednica Mountain and its peak Sljeme (1033m high) is the place where you can enjoy a beautiful all around view. You can walk up (app. 2 h) or take the cablecar. Up there you can find numerous mountain houses and have lunch (for example sausage and beans - 'grah s kobasicom'). You should also visit the Medvedgrad castle with the Homeland Shrine.

Samobor; this nice old town is situated 20 km east of Zagreb and has many pastry shops with delicious cakes ('kremšnite') and many pubs. There are also the ruins of the old Samobor Castle and Šmidhen swimming pools. Nature lovers should visit the surrounding hilly region (Samoborsko gorje and Žumberak).

Hrvatsko zagorje is a province northwest of Zagreb, where you can find thermal springs Stubičke, Tuheljske and Krapinske toplice, as well as beautiful castles (Trakošćan, Veliki Tabor, Miljana and 50 others). There is also the monument to the National Anthem at Zelenjak valley. The Museum of Evolution and excavation of the Neanderthal man is in Krapina, and the Shrine of the Holy Mother of God in Marija Bistrica (a popular pilgrimage place).

SHOPPING

The most important shopping zones are the streets adjacent to the central square (Ilica, Vlaška, Jurišićeva, Teslina) with many small shops and boutiques. There are a few big shopping centers:

Importanne Center (near the main railway station),
Importanne Gallery (in Vlaška),
Kaptol Center, Mercatone.

Working hours for shops are (usually) 08-20 h.

There are several green markets in Zagreb. The biggest and most popular is Dolac, which is situated above the central square.

If you run out of money, and posses an AMEX, Diners or EuroCard/MasterCard credit card, there are a lot of places in Zagreb where you can draw your money. Unfortunately, there are only two locations in Zagreb where owners of a Visa credit card can make transactions (Vlaška 26 and Zrinjevac 16).

CINEMAS

Zagreb has a number of cinemas offering various programs. The most popular are:

'Central' Petrinjska 4.

In each cinema there are mostly three performances, usually in the evening. Movies are shown in the original languages with subtitles.

ENTERTAINMENT

Zagreb has a very interesting nightlife. There are various streets with many pleasant cafés and pubs (Tkalčićeva, Opatovina, Teslina) becoming very alive in the evening until the morning hours. Some places are very popular but they are not in the very center: ‘Medvedgrad’ pub at Savska, lake Jarun (especially in the summer).

In addition to this, Zagreb has a large number of discotheques and night clubs, the most popular are: 'Hemingway Bar', Trg maršala Tita; 'Saloon', Tuškanac 1a; 'The Best', Jarunska cesta 5; 'Aquarius', Jarun (the lake); 'The Gallery', Jarun (the lake); 'Papaya', Schlosserove stube 2; 'Mango Mambo Bar', Schlosserove stube 2; 'Gjuro II', Medvešćak 2; and 'Sokol Klub', Trg Maršala Tita 6. 'Močvara' (The Swamp) and 'Jabuka' (The Apple) are reserved for alternative music fans.For those who prefer classical music there are the symbols of Zagreb’s classical culture: the Lisinski Concert Hall and Croatian National Theater (with Drama, Opera and Ballet).

SPORT & RECREATIONAL CENTRES

In 1987 Zagreb was host to the 14th Universiade (Student World Sport Games), thus it has a large number of different sporting facilities. The largest sport centers are:

ŠP 'Jarun', Aleja mira bb, (10 minutes walking from 'Sava'): the artificial lake offering various activities.

1. From Ban Jelačić Square take tram 6 (Sopot) (dir. east)...

2. After 2 stations you'll pass by Railway Station...

3. ..and after one more by the greatest multiplex cinema in Zagreb (Cinestar).

4. Five stations from Jelačić's Square on your right side you'll see Bus Terminal (Autobusni kolodvor).

5. Get off the tram...

6. ...pass the street...

7. ...take the stairway...

8. ...and get in the building.

Ban Jelacic Square - Dolac Market - Tkalciceva Street

1. This is the clock at the Ban Jelacic Square. Enter the street between this two buildings...

2. ...after a few meters of walking you'll see stairs in front of you...

3. Look at your left side... This is the beginning of Tkalciceva, street famous by its numerous pubs.

4. But if you have decided to scale at that stairs on pic.2 you'll find yourself at Dolac Market.

3. After about a minute of walking on your left side you'll see Zrinjevac park...

6. ...and park on Kralj Tomislav Square.

7. You'll perceive main trainstation building in front of you...

8. ...and pass by very useful sign post of Zagreb's sights.

9. Entrance is below the clock...

10. ...and that's it.

Ban Jelacic Square - Main Railway Station (by tram)

1. Starting point: Ban Jelacic's Statue

2. Wait for the tram number 6 (Sopot) or 13 (Kvaternikov trg) in direction east...

3. ...drive for 2 stations...

4. ...and get off on the station named "Glavni kolodvor" (Main Railway Station)...

5. ...and that's it!

If the path takes you in opposite direction take one of the trams mentioned above at the station "Glavni kolodvor" but in direction west (6 - Črnomerec or 13 - Žitnjak)!
